Case: OTDC Ltd.: Showcasing Odisha to the World (IIMR-C20-08/2022)

Abstract

The case describes the efforts made by Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) to promote tourism in the state of Odisha and the challenges it is facing. OTDC is a government of Odisha undertaking that has started multiple initiatives like promoting eco-tourism, and sports tourism, and highlighting the tourism potential of historically neglected areas. These initiatives are not only in line with the state government’s tourism policies but have also helped the organization become more viable. However, natural disasters like cyclones and pandemics have devastated the whole tourism industry in Odisha and imperiled the financial health of OTDC, forcing it to privatize some prized properties. The choices facing the organization’s top management include its revitalization after the twin shocks of Cyclone Fani and Covid-19 and its positioning in the tourism landscape of the state.
